New Features Overview For EPM

While waiting for the release of the upcoming EPM version I thought I would publish my notes from the Oracle webcast covering new features in EPM If you want to find out more details about each product I recommend you to reserve two and a half hours and listen through the entire webcast as it contains nice presentations from each of the EPM product teams. The recording is available via the Oracle BI&EPM EMEA Partner Community blog.

In the Top Gun conference we also received lots of interesting information about the changes that will bring to EPM infrastructure. Unfortunately Oracle does not want to share this information until the new release is made publicly available so you will have to wait patiently for the juicy technical bits until then...

All the information extracted from the webcast is naturally covered by the Oracle Safe Harbor statement which means that it's all subject to change until the new release has gone gold.

General Improvements (all EPM products)

  • Better support for ODL logging and addition of ECID information to make troubleshooting across several product components easier
  • Backwards compatibility to LCM - importing artifacts from release and up supported in

Hyperion Financial Management

Web form and grid usability enhancements:
  • Save more POV settings in form definitions (show or hide dimensions and reorder them)
  • Save POV members as favorites for easier access (no need to open the POV Member Selector panel every time)
  • Support for dynamic POV memberlists
  • Support for on-demand rules launched per form
Other new HFM features:
  • General UI improvements (POV and Member Selector settings persist across HFM modules)
  • Security user access UI implemented in ADF
  • HFM modules that are not used (for example Process Control and IC Transactions) can be disabled and thus hidden from the menus by administrators via the Module Configuration panel
  • Audit log for differences after loading metadata
  • LCM supports additional HFM artifacts: application, data, audit, process management, Extended Analytics templates

Hyperion Planning

  • Support for ASO databases in Planning applications
  • Support for flexible custom dimensions that may differ in each plan type
  • Ability for end users to create dimension members on the fly (only in separate modules such as Project Financial Planning). This feature can be enabled or disabled per hierarchy.
  • Outline Load Utility implemented in the web interface: allows metadata to be imported and exported from the Planning UI
  • Access to Planning metadata in Smart View (add or update members, build hierarchies)
  • Export/import Planning metadata and data to/from a relational database
  • Task list visualizations for easier tracking (by task status, type, users etc.)
  • Planning Cloud Service: Service to be released later this year. Based on Planning

Financial Data Quality Management (FDM) and beyond

  • FDM rebranded as Financial Data Quality Management, Enterprise Edition (FDMEE)
  • FDMEE combines classic FDM and ERP Integrator into a single product built on the ERPI platform (ODI installed and configured automatically)
  • will be the terminal release for classic FDM - new customers may only buy FDMEE
  • FDMEE will be released in phases ( GA, Patch Set 1 and Patch Set 2)
  • Core FDM features present in GA version but features like full HFM adapter functionality will follow later in PS1 and 2.
  • Some functions to be introduced in PS1 and PS2:
    • Scripting in Jython
    • Integration with DRM
    • Data synchronization between all EPM application types
    • HSF adapter
  • FDMEE UI is integrated in EPM Workspace

Financial Reporting

  • Old dog learns new tricks - FR reports and books to be supported on mobile devices via native browsers on each platform:
    • iPhone and iPad (iOS5 and 6)
    • Android phones and tablets (Android 3.x and 4.x)
  • Mobile support allows read-only access with POV selection, prompts etc. but no authoring or scheduling features.
  • Improved Smart View support (full FR formatting available when using Function Grids in Word and Excel)
  • Create a cover page before TOC in report books

Smart View

Upcoming SV features (some already present in
  • OBIEE functionality added (view created content, program OBIEE objects in VB etc.)
  • Performance improvements
  • Improved ad-hoc functionality: change POV on the grid, perform operations on multiple cells etc.
  • Expanded VBA toolkit

Hyperion Strategic Finance

  • Smart View functionality greatly extended to provide full MS Office integration (complements the HSF Windows client)

Disclosure Management

Note: Release already available.
  • New publishing options: PDF generation, EDGAR-ready HTML output

    • Simplifies definition of assignment logic for groups of sources
  • HPCM is certified on Exalytics since
  • Smart View integration for drill-through links and custom queries to Excel

  1. Hi Henri,

Thanks for the info. Good concise summary!

Question: when do you expect the GA to be released?

I was prepping my customer for a > maintenance release, but I may leap frog it for if it's due in the next couple months.

  2. We don't have any exact information as usual but rumors say we're getting close...

  3. After reading your post, I feel like a kid on Christmas eve. I wish Oracle would hurry up and make general availability.

One question I have is if you know more about the HFM statement that supports a dynamic POV. Could you clarify on that? One possible interpretation is that you can build a POV similar to that of SmartView AdHoc or extended analytics -meaning you could say all base of x and all base of y... I am hoping that is what is meant.

    1. I assume that the dynamic POV feature is what was already added to in Patch Set Update 302. Here's a snippet from the readme file but there's more so you should check patch nr. 15850273 on Oracle Support.

Support for Dynamic POV Member Lists in Web Data Forms

This release provides support for dynamic POV member lists in Web Data Forms. You can create dynamic POV member lists to display dimension members that meet specific criteria. Dynamic POV member lists are created dynamically at runtime, based on the current POV member of one or more dimensions.

Using dynamic POV member lists in data forms enables you to quickly populate rows and columns with valid members, depending on what has been selected in the POV. For example, you can create a dynamic POV member list that defines valid entities per year. When you select a year in the data form, the system displays only the valid entities that were defined in the member list for that year.

      [... etc ...]

    2. Thanks for your thoughts! I do think that would be handy (especially if you start using more dimensions you were limited to in previous versions), and do hope that they get what I was describing one day too.

  4. is out for download !

  5. Hi Henri

Thx for the Post.. I was wondering if you can tell a little bit more about the Functionality of "•Ability for end users to create dimension members on the fly"

    Thx a lot

    1. From Planning Administrator's Guide:
"Dynamic members are those that users can create when working with business rules if prompted that insufficient members exist, and that an administrator must refresh the database to recreate the required placeholders in Essbase."

Administrators can enable the dynamic member functionality for parent members ("Enable for Dynamic Children" property added in member properties). Second new property "Number of Possible Dynamic Children" is the number of members that are allowed to be created by users. When the database is refreshed Essbase will create placeholder entries for the defined number of potential members.

Note that this functionality is only available in Planning modules: Oracle Hyperion Workforce Planning, Oracle Hyperion Public Sector Planning and Budgeting, Oracle Hyperion Capital Asset Planning, and Oracle Project Financial Planning.

You can read more about dynamic members from the Admin Guide:
